Büyükada (literally big island) is not surprisingly the largest of the islands, and has the most opportunities for shopping – it also attracts the most tourists though, so best avoided on summer weekends.
Sightseeing highlights on Büyükada include the 6th-century Aya Yorgi Church and Monastery, the hundred-year-old Hamidiye Mosque built by Abdul Hamid and the Ayios Dimitrios Church.
There is a tourist office located in the ferry building on Büyük Ada from which you can obtain free maps of the islands, as well as information brochures. They also sell books including an intriguing series of English-language mystery stories set on the islands by Lawrence Goodman.
Beautiful wooden Ottoman mansions dot Buyukada and its neighbours, some have been restored and are now among the most popular Princes' Islands hotels.
The Princes' Islands make a great base for a visit to Istanbul. The Karamanyan is a restored mansion on the delightful island of Heybeliada, only 50 minutes by boat from the city centre. Accommodation comprises four beautiful apartments, perfect for families, couples and groups of friends to rent.
